Saudi Fintech barq Expands Global QR Payments Through Alipay+

Saudi fintech company barq has launched outbound cross-border QR payments through a new partnership with Alipay+, the unified wallet gateway operated by Ant International. The collaboration enables barq users to make payments abroad by scanning QR codes at merchants that accept Alipay+.

According to the announcement, the service will be available to more than 12 million barq users and will extend across more than 220 markets. These include destinations in the Middle East, Asia, Europe and the UK, with coverage spanning sectors such as retail, dining, transport and healthcare.

barq said it is the first Alipay+ partner in the Middle East to enable outbound cross-border QR payments. The rollout is set to begin progressively from May 2026.

Supporting Saudi Arabia’s Digital Payments Push

The partnership aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 agenda, which includes efforts to advance digital payments and reduce reliance on cash. It also reflects the Kingdom’s broader push to strengthen its digital financial infrastructure and expand payment connectivity for consumers traveling abroad.

By linking barq’s domestic wallet users to Alipay+’s merchant network, the initiative is designed to simplify international spending through the same QR-based payment experience users already know at home.

Executive Commentary

Ahmed Alenazi, CEO and founder of barq, said the collaboration is intended to give customers a familiar payment experience overseas while reinforcing barq’s role in the Saudi fintech ecosystem.

“This collaboration enables our customers to pay globally with the same simplicity they experience locally, setting a new benchmark for Saudi fintech and accelerating our vision of connecting users to the global economy,” Alenazi said.

Pietro Candela, General Manager of EMEA at Alipay+, said the partnership supports QR payment adoption from Saudi Arabia and is in line with the innovation goals of Vision 2030.

“Alipay+ is delighted to partner with barq to promote QR payments from the Kingdom, directly supporting its Vision 2030 goals for innovation,” Candela said.

Industry Analysis

The launch highlights how cross-border QR payment interoperability is becoming a key feature in digital wallet expansion. For Saudi Arabia, the move may help position local fintech providers as more globally connected, especially as outbound travel and digital commerce continue to grow.

It also signals increasing collaboration between regional fintech firms and international payment networks. As more wallets seek to offer seamless overseas acceptance, partnerships like this could become an important differentiator in the competitive payments market.
