HABIBMETRO Adopts BPC SmartVista to Modernise Card Systems in Pakistan
Habib Metropolitan Bank (HABIBMETRO) has selected BPC’s SmartVista platform to upgrade its card issuing and transaction processing capabilities, as the Pakistani lender continues to expand its digital banking infrastructure.
The implementation is part of HABIBMETRO’s broader digital transformation strategy and is designed to create a more scalable foundation for future growth in digital financial services. It also aligns with the State Bank of Pakistan’s Vision 2028 initiative, which aims to modernise the country’s financial system and support greater digital inclusion.
Broader Card Offering and Scheme Compliance
With the new platform, HABIBMETRO plans to broaden its card portfolio by introducing both physical debit cards and virtual cards. The bank will also upgrade its automated teller machine (ATM) and branch point of sale (POS) networks to meet the latest certification requirements for international payment schemes as well as Pakistan’s domestic payment scheme, PayPak.
In addition, HABIBMETRO intends to use the SmartVista integration platform as a payment-specific enterprise bus to strengthen interoperability with both traditional and non-traditional market participants. The system will also support tokenisation, a feature that can improve the security of card-based transactions.
Capacity to Support Higher Transaction Volumes
HABIBMETRO currently processes more than 3.25 million transactions per day. The infrastructure upgrade is expected to help the bank scale further as transaction volumes increase and customer demand for digital payment services grows.
The bank said the upgrade will also support the introduction of international card ATM acquiring, card-based loyalty programmes, and Google Pay. It is also expected to enable faster integrations with fintech companies, bill aggregators, and remittance firms.
The project affects more than 850,000 cardholders, who are expected to benefit from upgraded card options and improved transaction reliability.
Khurram Shahzad Khan, President and CEO of HABIBMETRO, said the introduction of next-generation products and solutions is an important step in building a more agile and customer-focused banking environment.
Furrukh Ali-Baig, Managing Director, Pakistan, at BPC, said HABIBMETRO is well positioned to advance its digital payments plans through a combination of globally proven products and localised services.
The latest deployment builds on the existing relationship between the two companies. BPC previously supported HABIBMETRO with the rollout of its digital fraud management system.
Industry Analysis
The upgrade reflects the continued modernisation of Pakistan’s banking and payments infrastructure, with financial institutions increasingly investing in platforms that can support scale, security, and interoperability. For HABIBMETRO, the move strengthens its ability to add new payment features while meeting local and international scheme requirements.
More broadly, the deployment highlights the growing importance of flexible card systems that can connect with fintech partners and digital wallets, while also supporting tokenisation and other security enhancements. As digital transaction volumes rise, such infrastructure upgrades are likely to remain central to competitive banking strategy in Pakistan.
