ADIC Appoints BlackRock Veteran Edward Winter as Real Assets CIO

The Abu Dhabi Investment Council (ADIC) has appointed Edward Winter as Chief Investment Officer for its real assets business, strengthening its senior leadership team as it continues to expand its global investment platform.

Winter joins ADIC from BlackRock and is set to begin his new role in September, reporting to Executive Director Saoud Al Mulla. According to the report, he will oversee a global real assets portfolio that includes infrastructure and real estate investments spanning more than 200 holdings across developed and emerging markets.

The portfolio under Winter’s remit covers fund investments, co-investments and separately managed accounts, with exposure to sectors including energy, digital infrastructure and hospitality. The appointment comes as ADIC broadens its investment strategy and deepens its focus on long-term asset classes.

Before joining ADIC, Winter led mid-market funds at Global Infrastructure Partners across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He previously spent more than 12 years at Macquarie Group, bringing extensive experience in infrastructure investing and institutional asset management.

ADIC operates as an independently managed arm of Mubadala Investment Company and oversees more than US$160 billion in assets. The fund is currently working to expand its strategy with a target of annual returns of at least 10%, while also increasing exposure to hedge funds, launching a secondaries business, and accelerating its push into the insurance sector.

The latest hire adds to a broader recruitment drive by Abu Dhabi investment institutions seeking experienced professionals from major global firms and pension funds. ADIC has recently brought in former Future Fund Chief Investment Officer Ben Samild as Chief Strategist, appointed former Canada Pension Plan Investment Board executive Alain Carrier as Executive Director of Private Equity, and hired Simon Fraser, another former Future Fund executive, as Head of Derivatives.

The continued hiring activity reflects the emirate’s wider effort to strengthen in-house investment capabilities and channel oil wealth into assets designed to generate long-term returns. The move also highlights Abu Dhabi’s growing ambition to compete for top-tier international investment talent.

Industry Analysis

Winter’s appointment underscores the importance of real assets in the portfolios of large sovereign investors seeking stable, long-duration returns. Infrastructure and real estate remain attractive allocations for institutions looking to diversify beyond traditional public markets, particularly amid ongoing volatility in global financial conditions.

For Abu Dhabi, the recruitment of senior leaders with experience at BlackRock, Macquarie, Global Infrastructure Partners and major pension funds suggests a sustained push to build a globally competitive investment platform in-house. This strategy may help ADIC sharpen its execution across complex asset classes while supporting its broader return objectives.

At the same time, the appointment signals that Middle East sovereign wealth funds remain active in attracting global investment expertise despite geopolitical uncertainty. The focus on seasoned leadership points to a continued emphasis on disciplined capital allocation, portfolio diversification and long-term value creation.
